GEOLOGY AND TERROIRS

The Aygues
terraces

To the west of the village, the terraces of the Aygues are made up of gravel, clay, and fine sands (light brown soils). They feature thick alluvium and alternating pebble banks with fairly abundant clay matrices.

The sandy soils produce delicate tannins that give the wines finesse and freshness.

As a cool terroir, the terraces of the Aygues are ideal for producing wines with aromas of red fruits and licorice, all with freshness and lightness.

The Miocene
hills

To the north of the commune, the Miocene hills, or ‘Montagne du Ventabren,’ form one of the main terroirs of Cairanne. Erosion has shaped limestone pebbles with rare flints, alternating with marls from the Miocene period.

Numerous clay veins enhance the beauty of this unique terroir. The foothills are nourished by runoff that has carried pebbles and clay from the relief.

This terroir gives the wines complex, deep aromas of black fruit and spices.

The Garrigues
terraces

To the south of the village, the terraces of the Garrigues stretch on either side of the locality known as Les Garrigues – formed by the ancient riverbed of the Ouvèze. They are made up of stony alluvium resting on fine-grained materials dating from the Tertiary period – red clay soils rich in iron oxide.

This airy, sun-drenched plateau creates the ideal conditions for optimal ripeness, enhancing the wines’ generosity and richness.

Climate

Cairanne has a Mediterranean climate, hot and dry, characterized by abundant sunshine and a strong influence of the Mistral wind. The Mistral is a key factor of the terroir, helping to keep the vines healthy. Rainfall, meanwhile, is mostly concentrated in spring and autumn.

Located among the westernmost Crus of the Rhône Valley, Cairanne benefits from the regulating influence of the Mistral wind, which moderates temperatures and contributes to the freshness of its wines. The Aygues River and its riparian woodland, a vital ecological corridor, also play a crucial role in maintaining this climatic balance, further contributing to the unique character of Cairanne wines.
